Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” suggests free markets self-regulate for societal good. The SATA Summer School introduces the “The Visible Hand”: a deliberate, art and technology-driven approach to support Hong Kong’s traditional small businesses, which face unprecedented difficulties and marginalization in the digital age.
Through our summer school, 4 SATA artists and 20 mentees will deeply explore these businesses’ histories, legacies, and practices. Adopting fresh, transdisciplinary perspectives, this “visible hand” will intervene, aiming not just to sustain their operations but also to illuminate their intrinsic value and reshape their perception in fast-changing Hong Kong. The research outcomes of this summer school will be synthesized into projects to be exhibited at the SATA Festival. By preserving and re-contextualizing these tangible aspects, we highlight the profound human impact of technological shifts, grounding abstract economic theory in lived reality.
