The Visible Hand: Hong Kong's Traditional Shops in Transition
The Visible Hand: Hong Kong's Traditional Shops in Transition
- Q: How will the research be supervised? Do I need to approach local stores independently? 我需要自己去聯繫本地老店嗎?A: The pairing process with mentors and local stores will be facilitated. The selected stores are already secured and will be announced later on the website. You will be assigned a mentor who shares similar interests and expertise in your chosen medium.
- Do I need to create work directly responding to the store I’m researching? Each group will be paired with a shop to initiate their project, using it as a starting point for exploration. Your project has the potential to expand beyond the shop, delving into its history, industry, or trade narrative to create a broader perspective.
- Is it mandatory to work with art technology? What mediums are accepted? Can I focus on another medium while incorporating art technology? Art technology encompasses a broad approach to both the creative process and conceptual thinking. The SATA school adopts a cross-disciplinary approach, and technology is not required to be part of the final outcome. For example, technology could be used as a research tool for data collection or other purposes.
- Do I need advanced technical skills? Will mentors provide support for project creation? We seek applicants who are open-minded and curious about art and technology from both practical and theoretical perspectives. Support will be provided, including technical workshops, lectures, and tutorials from international guest speakers to assist with your project development.
- How much time is allocated for the research process, and how much for completing the project? The timeline varies depending on the mentor group but typically spans 2–3 months for research. You will have sufficient time to create the final work, guided by a schedule managed by your mentor.
- What should I include in the intention statement? Your intention statement should express your expectations and interests in the program. This helps us understand how to tailor the program to your needs and determine which mentor would be the best match for you.
