The SATA Meetup illuminated the complex interplay between art and technology in Asia, shaped by diverse political and economic contexts yet unified by the challenge of moving beyond the computing logic rooted in English-speaking cultures. The event showcased how Asian technology has evolved from the periphery, fostering unique perspectives that enrich artistic expression.
Entering the program, I anticipated exploring how technology-based art reflects personal narratives. The meetup fulfilled this expectation by presenting a diverse array of creators who demonstrated innovative approaches, weaving personal and cultural stories into their work with technology.
The Toolkit Workshops were a highlight, with their framework proving invaluable for sparking inner exploration through creator-driven prompts. These sessions opened new pathways for creativity in technology-based art, encouraging both personal and collective engagement. The workshop-based approach was highly effective, particularly due to its emphasis on active participation and creator-led prompts, which fostered deeper connections between technology and artistic expression. The diversity of perspectives and the toolkit’s structure worked exceptionally well, though incorporating a more structured feedback loop could further enhance the learning experience.
The meetup profoundly deepened my understanding of technology as more than a tool—it is a medium for reshaping society and culture, serving as a reframing device to view the world anew. The emphasis on using technology thoughtfully to reveal its limitations and potential, particularly in relation to cultural locality and regional narratives, was especially compelling.
Inspired by the event, my work has taken new directions, particularly in exploring the intersections of AI, missing data, and protocols. The dialogue motivated me to delve deeper into how technology, despite its shortcomings, can enhance human experience and foster a nuanced understanding of the human condition through art. Moving forward, I aim to continue pushing these boundaries in my practice.
For future SATA Meetups, I suggest incorporating more hands-on technical sessions where artists can experiment directly with emerging technologies. Additionally, emphasizing narratives rooted in culture and locality would strengthen the symbiosis between Asian art’s distinctive qualities and modern technological innovations. To expand its impact, SATA could broaden its network to include participants from diverse fields, such as technology, to enrich cross-disciplinary dialogue. The warm, passionate planning of this event left a lasting impression, and I hope this collaborative spirit continues, particularly in highlighting the unique contributions of Korean technology and art. I look forward to seeing SATA’s community thrive in future projects.
